The Metrolink SBL is one of the most
heavily used lines on the 500+ mile Metrolink system. It runs from San Bernardino to Los
Angeles, parallel to and approximately two miles north of Interstate 10 (I-10), the most
congested freeway in San Bernardino County. The double -tracking of this 0.7 mile segment will
expand the window of 30-minute bi-directional service, improving trip times and trip reliability,
increasing ridership, and inducing a mode shift from auto to transit, thereby reducing I-10
congestion and greenhouse gas emissions overall.
The project segment straddles Rialto Station on the SBL. It includes a pedestrian underpass and
a second platform; bicycle/pedestrian upgrades to meet current ADA standards; and ADA
compliant safety improvements at three crossings, making the segment quiet -zone ready. It adds
station and gate coordination technology to reduce gate down time for roadway vehicles. This
project has a significant return on investment through operational efficiencies and congestion
1
